Bailiwick
How it works

A social network without the middleman.

Bailiwick works a lot like the apps you know: you post, your friends see it, they react and comment. What's different is where your posts go, and who gets to look at them on the way.

01

Where do my posts go?

On most social networks, your photo goes up to the company's computers first. Your friends download it from there. The company keeps a copy, often forever, and learns from everything you and your friends do with it.

On Bailiwick, your photo stays on your phone. When a friend opens the app, their phone asks yours for anything new and gets it directly. Nobody in the middle keeps a copy.

Other social apps Bailiwick it keeps a copy, studies it, sells ads straight from your phone to theirs
02

Circles: the right post for the right people

You aren't the same person with your grandmother as you are with your college friends, and you shouldn't have to be. Make a Circle for each group and pick one when you post.

Only the people in that Circle see the posts you share there. Take someone out of a Circle and they won't see anything new you post in it.

Family: can see it Climbing crew Book club
03

Adding friends

There's no search box full of strangers. To connect, you and a friend swap QR codes, in person or by sending a picture of it. Once you both say yes, you can see each other's posts.

Already have friends on Bailiwick? They can introduce you to each other.

⇄

Scan each other's code and you're connected.

04

What happens when my phone is off?

Your friends help each other out. When a friend in your Circle has already picked up your new photo, the others in that Circle can get it from them, even while your phone is off.

They can only pass it along, not look inside: a post stays locked to your Circle no matter whose phone it comes from.

And Bailiwick keeps the posts you've already received, so you can scroll through them anywhere.
Your phone: off Friend who alreadyhas your post Another friendin the Circle passed along still locked: only your Circle can open it
05

Who pays for it?

A big social network spends a fortune on data centers, and pays for them by selling your attention to advertisers. Bailiwick doesn't have data centers to pay for: your phone does the work of storing and sharing your posts.

So there's no reason to show you ads, and no reason to keep you scrolling.

$$$ data centers cost a fortune → paid for with ads your phone does the work → nothing to pay for
